Deer in Belvedere have dodged a bullet now that city officials have decided to ward off the pesky herd with deer-resistant plants and fences rather than surgical sterilization.

“Reducing or slowing down population growth” would not determine residents’ complaints of eroded hillsides and eaten foliage — damage attributed to destructive deer, Mayor James Campbell stated at Monday’s City Council meeting.

“I think it’s off the table,” Campbell commented of the surgical sterilization, which had been touted by some residents as a non-lethal, humane deer population management tool.
