Whole new effort pulls derelict boats from Richardson Bay

Published Saturday February 11

“We are not at the end of this road yet,” said Marin Supervisor Kate Sears,…

Not occupied derelict boats bobbing on Richardson Bay are being removed under a completely new enforcement policy to address an issue that has vexed Southern Marin for years.

The action comes as a lot of municipalities in Southern Marin, and a regional agency that oversees Richardson Bay, grapple with a community of “anchor outs” that live on their vessels and who have a long history on the bay.

The bay has become increasingly busy. In 2008, there were an estimated 98 vessels anchored in Richardson Bay. By 2015, the number had grown to approximately 210 to 240 vessels. While a lot of are in excellent condition, more than half are in fair to poor shape, or worse.
